Alfred de Jong

Nurse

Region: Ridderkerk

Alfred de Jong is my name. Passionate anesthesia and technical home care nurse. Since July 1999 entrepreneur in the training field in care from the thoughts:

  1. “Do ordinary things unusually well”. (Every day evening or night, every patient, at any time).
  2. “If you don’t practice the game, you shouldn’t interfere with the rules of the game.” So do you want to teach? Then you have to work in practice.
  3. If you make a mistake, tell everyone so they don’t have to make that mistake.

I imposed these one-liners on myself in July 1999 and that is why I still work in practice. Just between patients, colleagues and since 2 years no longer among managers. There are far too many of those in healthcare. You do need a few, but they are only a few and not 40%.

From these thoughts I provide care, I am very curious, want to understand everything in any case and never give up. Will never say “you’ll hear from us again”. Or even worse: “I pass it on”. I am a big proponent of close the loop communication from CRM. “You will hear from us” I invariably replace with “I will call or email you back at …. (date, time)”. “I pass it on” I replace with “I will ask today for ….(time) …..(name) who does the follow-up, so that is ….. (name) and he will contact you by phone or email on ….(date) at ….(time).

A medication administration should go with a double check. Most say, “I’ve got morphine here, can you check that?” The other sees that person with an ampoule, whom he or she has known for years and says, yes I saw it. And both sign. Medication errors are the third leading cause of death in the Netherlands.

I do it like this. I ask 4 questions:
  1. Do you want to read the UVV/prescription?
  2. What is written on this ampoule?
  3. What is the strength?
  4. What is the expiration date?

I firmly believe in preventive medicine, you can win there. Our 3 ADHD-light children were the only ones without a game console for the entire primary school period. They were allowed to choose from me. A sailboat or a game console. It became the boat. Always play outside. Except for a few fractures, they never have anything. And finally, I believe in exercising to stay fit. A movie was made about it and it’s called “Letting Go”. I have won several top prizes in recent years with high performance catamaran sailing. And if you are still on stage, I always ask for money for a good cause, make a wish, ambulance wish, Cliniclowns. And famous for my crazy charity campaigns (cycling around the IJsselmeer with children from primary school). Cycle back from Paris to Ridderkerk within 24 hours. And collect thousands of euros for the Cliniclowns.

Every day I think, yes we can go again. Bring it on!! Corona or not, everywhere, always, full throttle. After 14 Roparuns and ditto Rounds round Texel, I know that giving up is not an option. Nickname Fredje Rocket. And it is also true: cycling against the wind makes you strong. I’m almost 60 but age is just a number.
