BLOOD PRESSURE

BLOODPRESSUREVALUE

What does this value mean?

The bloodpressure is generated by the heart. The heart acts as a pump to move blood through the body. This pump contracts to pump blood from the heart into the blood vessels. Then it relaxes, allowing blood to flow into the heart.

Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood in the blood vessels. It is represented by the systolic pressure (upper pressure) and the diastolic pressure (lower pressure). When the heart contracts, blood goes into the body, and the pressure is at its highest. This is called the systolic blood pressure (upper pressure). When the heart then relaxes, a lower pressure occurs; this is the diastolic pressure. Blood pressure changes constantly; for example, it is higher when you run compared to when you sit quietly.

Hypotension

A low blood pressure is also referred to as hypotension. This is only a problem if someone experiences symptoms. Examples of complaints are dizziness, feeling lightheaded, and fainting. It can have various causes, with dehydration being the most common cause. Therefore, try to drink enough water (at least 2 liters per day).

Hypertension

When the average resting blood pressure is too high it is called hypertension. This increases the risk of heart and vascular diseases and can also cause damage, particularly to the kidneys and eyes. This damage can occur without you experiencing any symptoms.

Hypertensive crisis

A hypertensive crisis occurs when the blood pressure is severely elevated (systolic pressure > 200 mmHg). This can quickly cause damage to the brain, heart, kidneys or eyes. If this happens, it is important to contact your GP.

Measurements

In all PREPTIC examinations, the BIG-registered Preptic icon doctornurse takes the blood pressure before the blood is drawn. Some clients may be nervous before the examination, which can raise blood pressure. The blood pressure is measured twice to ensure accuracy and provide the appropriate advice.
